Holland lops are a true dwarf rabbit breed! That’s right, they are a dwarf breed. When bred properly and through carefully chosen genetics they will stay tiny and not turn into Mini Lops rabbits or just some mixed rabbit breed with lop ears which so many people confuse Holland Lops with. The Netherland Dwarf Rabbit, another popular breed, is about the same size, but Holland Lops are the better choice for small homes and apartments. We breed our purebred Holland Lops to be right around 2.5 - 3 pounds. Although the breed standard is 2-4 pounds, we consistently breed for small, tiny Holland Lops that weigh 3 pounds and less.
A tiny Holland Lop bunny makes for a wonderful compact pet that’s easy to care for and handle for all ages! Contrary to Mini Lops, Holland Lop bunnies should always be under 4lbs, compared to Mini Lop rabbits which will be much bigger lop-eared rabbits between 4-6lbs. The term Mini Lop rabbit can be quiet confusing, insinuating that they are smaller than Holland Lop Rabbits, but in fact, Holland Lops are a true dwarf rabbit breed. Mini Lop rabbits are not a dwarf rabbit breed. That being said, a smaller Holland Lop rabbit translates to a much more manageable lop-eared rabbit to keep as a pet compared to their larger friends the Mini Lop rabbits.
Since Holland Lop bunnies are such a small dwarf rabbit breed, these little lop eared bunnies make for wonderful pets in many situations. Here at our small farmette in Northern New Jersey, we have had many Holland Lop bunnies for sale in NJ that many people buy for apartment living. With a smaller housing situation, Holland Lop bunnies make for fantastic apartment or condo living conditions.
Holland Lop bunnies can easily be confined to their smaller hutches due to their petite size. Larger lop eared rabbits, such as French Lop or Mini Lop rabbits require much larger housing requirements making space a much bigger issue for the condo or apartment bunny owner. With smaller housing requirements, their hutch and litter boxes can be concealed much easier due to their smaller size. Although Holland Lop bunnies can free roam, which we will discuss in later posts, if they don’t have that access, then apartment living with a Holland Lop bunny is a wonderful choice.
Holland Lop Bunnies Have Great Personalities
What else makes them such darn good pets is their personalities! Having breed many different rabbit breeds from standard eared to lop eared rabbits over the years, Holland lops have the absolute best personalities. We have raised many types of rabbit breeds from New Zealand, California and Dutch rabbits, but nothing compares to a tiny Holland Lop bunny! Our purebred Holland Lops come from pedigreed parents that are raised responsibly and are some of the most pampered NJ Holland Lops! When raised and bred properly, they will love to be carried around and be a personal companion. They tend to be much less skittish than other breeds we have raised making them so easy for both adults but especially children to handle. Holland Lop behavior is well-known for being family-friendly and affectionate. They always want to be a part of the action where ever the family is.

Don’t be fooled though by clever marketing campaigns on Craigslist or other lop-eared rabbit for sale sites, it takes some time and practice. We always tell our customers that although our Holland Lop bunnies are 100% litter trained, they aren’t litter trained to your home just yet! It takes just a few short weeks to teach them the basics of where to go in their new hutch. Remember they have never been to your home, they only know their old homes. So after a couple quick week they will grasp the new hutch and litter box concept and then its smooth sailing.
That being said, don’t be sold by a Holland Lop breeder making a statement that their Holland Lops are already litter-trained. They very well may be, not calling anyone a liar, but that doesn’t translate to litter trained to your home. We just like to be clear and 100% transparent on what you are getting from us.
