How Do You Care For Holland Lop Bunnies?

  • The diet of the Holland Lop rabbit is primarily timothy hay, along with an excellent, high-quality pellet feed, as well as clean, fresh drinking water.

  • Healthy foods and special treats should be introduced to their diet gradually, starting at around 4 - 6 months of age. Their tummies are very delicate.

  • Although a little breed, Holland Lops require adequate area to hop about and should be kept in a big cage/crate, hutch, or exercise pen. They can be allowed to be free-roaming house bunnies as long as your home is adequately bunny-proofed.

  • Bunnies require plenty of exercise, so make it a point to provide them with playtime in a secure, safe area outside of their cages on a daily basis.

  • Holland Lop Bunnies love to get cozy. Give your bunny a small blanket or something soft to cuddle up with.

  • Regularly handle your bunny daily to strengthen your bond and make sure they stay loving and cuddly. Begin on ground-level in a small area to get used to scooping them up and holding them properly.

  • Give your Holland Lop bunny some toys to add a bit of fun to the mix! A favorite rabbit-safe wooden chew toy keeps their teeth in excellent shape. Willow balls and untreated wood blocks are both excellent choices. Toilet paper tubes filled with hay, wiffle balls, cardboard boxes, tunnels, and other baby toys also make great playthings for tiny bunnies.

  • With a little patience, bunnies can usually be litter-trained in about a month. You will need a litter box filled with absorbent material such as paper bedding, wood pellets or shavings. Wood pellets (Cozy'n Fresh, Aspen Supreme, Feline Pine or Equine Fresh) and wired grated litter boxes are a great combination to prevent messes and for easy cleanup. Bunnies are creatures of habit. If your bunny has a favorite corner, it will most likely use that as his or her designated potty. At first, try several corners with multiple litter boxes to see where your bunny prefers to go.

  • Every month or so, trim your rabbit's nails and brush its fur. Grooming your Holland Lop bunny regularly will ensure it is healthy and happy.

  • However, it's important to remember that rabbits are delicate and quiet creatures who may become startled or frightened if handled or approached incorrectly.

  • Always keep an eye on your children and supervise when they play with their pet bunny rabbit. We suggest sitting on the ground for playtime and teaching your youngster to pet and handle the rabbit gently, not injuring it.

  • To create a safe and friendly environment, each youngster must be gentle when handling their bunny and learn how to handle them with care -- never squeezing, chasing or grabbing the bunny.

  • If your child is patient, cooperative, calm, and capable of gentle interaction, having a Holland Lop bunny as a member of the family can be very enjoyable.

Will My Bunny Get Along With My Other Pets?

  • It is possible for Holland Lop rabbits to get along with other house pets in the right environment and with a slow, gentle introduction.

  • You may be tempted to immediately introduce your rabbit to your cat or dog once you bring them home, but it's important to wait and follow some important steps first.

  • Give your rabbit a few days alone, away from other household pets, to allow it to get used to its new environment at ease.

  • Introduce your dog or cat with the bunny safely enclosed inside a cage or pen, and then work your way up to supervised sessions gradually increasing their duration until you are certain that neither one poses a threat. It's possible for this approach to take days, weeks, or even months to be successful.

  • After some time, most rabbits and other pets become acclimated to one another, but it's a good idea to think about your pet's personality before proceeding. If you can't handle this endeavor with patience and diligence, you'll need to prepare to keep your rabbit permanently separated and secured from other animals.
